I'll be the first to admit that I went through a period of time when I was obsessed with staying super bronzed at all times. The years when "GTL" was the anthem of every young twenty something New England person had in the back of his/her head thanks to the runaway hit "The Jersey Shore". Looking back now, we knew even then that tanning in beds was horrible for our skin, but I haveo chalk it up to the ignorance of youth- because we just didn't care. The darker you were the better. I actually rented space from a tanning salon for a few years, so I spent way more time in those beds than I should've.
At 42 though, I will say that it was a stupid stupid thing to do, and I check my skin religiously to make sure that at the first sign of something going on it can be adressed. I've now been in the skincare industry for twenty years and I've seen so many clients who've had to have huge chunks of their skin removed that I worry about it all the time. And that's the worst part about it. I have to sit and wait for what will most likely be inevitable considering the amount of time I spent frying myself to a crisp.
Do you know the signs of something gone wrong with your skin? Do you have someone do a full body check for you once a year to make sure there's nothing you're missing? If you spent time in tanning beds while you were younger then these are things you should address! Any spot that has jagged edges, changes in color/shape/size needs to be looked at right away. Certainly anything new that pops up needs to be looked at. And you need to look everywhere. Think about the parts of your body that touch the actual panel when you would lay down in a tanning bed. It's very possible for you to develop cancer at the top of the tush crack, or on your inner thighs...even underarms. Your scalp?
There is no excuse these days for anyone to still be coating themselves in tanning lotion and then getting into one of those tanning beds when we have beautiful, SAFE, airbrush tanning available to us. You can decide the level of color you get, and whatever issues you may take with the smell it has for a day or two
Let me be clear, I don't even offer airbrush tanning as a service but as an Esthetician my field is skin, and anything as dangerous and deadly as tanning beds needs to be discussed! My favorite airbrush tanning company is Nuda, a Canadian company that several air brush tanning artists here in Rhode Island use. Their formulas have a nice natural base that isn't even close to orange. It smells better than most products, and the transfer issues you might've had with other products isn't an issue after the first 24 hours. I always do the rapid version so that I can shower withing a reasonable time, but even when I've done the regular version and slept in it overnight, the smell and transfer issues were tolerable! The color is always beautiful and more of a brown sugar- which I (and Mr. Wax Queen) adore!
